THERE is room for Worcester Wolves to add another player from Europe to their squad this season, according to head coach Paul James.

Wolves made seven signings in the summer after only Ashton Khan agreed to stay at the British Basketball League outfit.

James said he was pleased with how Worcester, who host Sheffield Sharks on Friday (7.30pm), were shaping up as he felt there was a “really good balance of players”.

However, the Wolves boss revealed he did have the option to bolster his team further as he looks to increase competition for places and “keep everyone on their toes”.

“We have still got room for another European player,” said James, whose side beat Cheshire Phoenix 88-85 in overtime on Friday before losing 77-66 at Leicester Riders on Sunday.

“If we can find the right player, who can come in and gel with what we have got here, then we might look at bringing in someone else in one of the positions.

“But, at this moment in time, we have got a nice little balance here and if we do bring someone else in it is going to need to be someone who can fit into our work ethic and ethos this season.”

Marek Klassen, Trevor Setty, Jermel Kennedy, Danny Huffor, Alex Navajas and Andrew Bachman all made their league debuts for the club.

Deondre McWhorter also made his first appearance on Sunday after his delayed arrival from America.

James believes Wolves will reap the rewards this term following the decision to change their recruitment strategy.

“Because we have recruited so well, we have got any one of eight players who can start and that’s a nice situation to be in,” he said.

“It keeps training competitive. There is competition in every position and it keeps everybody on their toes.

“The guys are working really hard together and they are all about winning the next game and that’s what we want.

“Right now, we have got a really good balance of players.”

Despite falling short against reigning champions Leicester, James said it was a “very positive weekend” for Wolves.

“We didn’t play particularly well on Friday night, we shot the ball badly, but all it took was one good quarter and to come back from 16 points down was pleasing,” he added.

“It was a really good performance against Leicester but we just didn’t execute down the stretch.

“We were really competitive and were in with a chance of winning.

“Being two from two would have been a bonus but it was a tough weekend and we can be pleased with our start.”
