WORCESTER Wolves are putting together a plan to stop Glasgow Rocks star Kieron Achara at the University of Worcester Arena on Friday night (7.30pm).

The 6ft 10in forward is the captain of Great Britain and an “influential” figure for Rocks in the British Basketball League.

Wolves head coach Paul James is an admirer of Achara’s ability, saying “he can do anything”, and insisted it was important his side kept a tight rein on the 33-year-old.

“Kieron is a big influence, so we will be looking to limit his production because if he is not scoring, he’s rebounding and, if he’s not doing that, he’s creating scoring opportunities for other people,” James said.

“He is the kind of player if we can keep quiet we will give ourselves a great chance of winning the game.”

Glasgow started the season with a 90-56 thrashing of Manchester Giants before going down 82-74 to Newcastle Eagles and then beating Leeds Force 82-77 in the BBL Cup.

James continued: “Outside of Kieron, they have got a very talented bunch of players.

“They are playing very well together. They always play hard, so we have got to be ready and put all our hard work into practice.

“Glasgow are going to be a solid team this season and are going to finish in the top half of the table, so this is an important game for us.”

With no game last weekend, Wolves have been hitting the practice courts hard as they bid to bounce back after defeats to Sheffield Sharks and Leicester Riders.

Friday will be the first time Wolves have met Glasgow since the Scottish side knocked them out of the play-offs last term.

Worcester won the second leg 88-83 at the arena but it was not enough to overturn the deficit suffered following their 90-53 loss at Glasgow.

However, James added: “I haven’t thought about that because, as far as I am concerned, that was last year and we have got a different team now.

“They have made a few changes as well, so why would we have to have that thought in our minds?

“We have got a lot of work to do as far as getting to a point where we are playing the brand of basketball we want to produce.

“It didn’t happen for us in the last game and we are looking forward to putting that right.”
