WORCESTER Wolves are working on signing a player who can “protect the basket” as they aim to end their defensive woes.

Head coach Paul James revealed there were “some options” Wolves were looking into and he was hopeful of adding a new face within the “next few weeks”.

Worcester have lost eight of their 11 games in the British Basketball League, including back-to-back defeats to Manchester Giants and Plymouth Raiders over the weekend.

Having recently landed 6ft 10in forward Maurice Walker, who has rattled in 58 points in his first two games, James believes they have got “all the weapons” in attack.

But he admitted they needed a player who could “toughen up” Worcester at the other end of the court.

“We have got some options we are looking at but defensively there are areas we can strengthen,” James said.

“I think offensively we have all the weapons we need but defensively we need to bring in someone who is going to help with rebounding and just protect the basket.”

Worcester’s 94-81 defeat at Plymouth on Sunday means they have conceded more than 80 points in each of their last eight games.

Only Surrey Scorchers have got a worse defensive record this season, letting in 1,160 points, with Wolves tied second with Sheffield Sharks on 954.

“We are looking for a versatile player who can get it done at both ends of the floor but they will have more of a focus defensively because that’s something we really need to toughen up,” added James, whose side are seventh in the table.

“They can be foreign so we will still have that spot available.

“The beauty of having Maurice here with a British passport is it is almost like having another quality foreign player on the team.

“There are options we are looking at and hopefully in the next few weeks we might be able to find somebody.”

Wolves look to end a run of four successive defeats when they travel to 11th-placed Leeds Force on Friday (7.30pm).
