WORCESTER Wolves are determined to show they are not “one-game wonders” when they take on Bristol Flyers in a “massive game” at the SGS WISE Arena tonight (7.30pm).

Head coach Paul James said he was delighted with the way his team performed last Friday as they blew away in-form Sheffield Sharks 99-68 in the BBL Trophy first round.

However, he has now challenged his players to produce the goods again as Wolves aim to secure back-to-back victories for only the second time this season.

“That was the performance we had been searching for all season long,” said James whose side have lost 10 of their 15 games in the British Basketball League.

“But now is the time to back that up. We don’t want to be one-game wonders.

“I think we have come through a lot of pain already and we are looking to have a really strong second half of the season.”

Last month Wolves beat Bristol 88-56 at the University of Worcester Arena but then suffered an 81-74 defeat to the West Country visitors two weeks later.

Worcester sit one place above Flyers in seventh and James says it is “crucial” his team come out on top as they look to climb the table.

“The head-to-head record will be on the line tonight,” he said.

“If we win the head-to-head and end up tied at the end of the season, we will go ahead of them so it is a massive game for us.

“If we can come and play anywhere near how we played last Friday, we will be there or thereabouts in winning this game so it is a matter of everyone having their heads screwed on and coming to do a job.”

After slumping to the foot of the table, rejuvenated Bristol have put together a run of four successive wins.

But James believes Wolves “do not have anything to fear” as long as his players stick to his game-plan.

“Bristol are playing with a lot of confidence as they have scrapped their way through to some good wins,” he said.

“They are very tough on their own floor as the crowd is very close to the court and on top of you so we have got to deal with that battle as well. But we don’t have anything to fear.

“We have just got to make sure we play for each other and play as hard as we did the other night.

“If we do that, I think we have got too much for them to deal with.”

James is also hoping for some big showings from swingman Danny Huffor and small forward Andrew Bachman after they starred in Worcester’s win over Sheffield.

“I don’t want those guys to try to create too much as they are natural catch-and-shoot players,” added James who has doubts over the fitness of Ashton Khan after the point guard missed training earlier this week due to illness.

“It is up to the rest of the team to create shots for them.

”Danny has got that 31-point game in him but he does not do that consistently enough so he needs to back that up against Bristol.”
