Wolves raring to soar at the Eagles

HEAD coach Paul James says Worcester Wolves will be raring to go against Newcastle Eagles on Friday despite their British Basketball League Cup heartache.

Wolves saw their hopes of reaching a major final dashed with a 193-172 aggregate defeat to Plymouth Raiders in their two-legged last-four clash over the weekend.

A 111-83 thrashing at the University of Worcester in Saturday’s first encounter all but ended the contest, however, Wolves restored pride with an 89-82 success at the Plymouth Pavilions on Sunday.

James accepts his team were second best on their own court but was pleased to see them spoil Raiders’ party in Devon and expects them to be fully motivated for two games in 24 hours this weekend.

Wolves travel to unbeaten league-leaders Newcastle Eagles on Friday (7.30pm) before hosting third-placed Glasgow Rocks on Saturday (7pm).

“Credit to Plymouth, they played an absolutely fantastic game on Saturday and shot the ball extremely well,” the Wolves chief said.

“They had a game that doesn’t come along too often. We have got to be realistic. The talent they have brought in is very good and it all came together on the day.

“We would have had to play out of our skins (to reach the final) so we went to Plymouth to try and win the game and not let them have the party they wanted.

“We wanted to show what we could do and it was good to come out with a win.

“The fact we won the game and played well means we are not too despondent and won’t have any problems getting up for Newcastle.

“We can play well on the road, as we proved at Plymouth, so we will be looking forward to it. It’s a very big weekend for us.”
