England encounter for James

First published in Worcester Wolves

WORCESTER Wolves director of basketball Paul James took a break from the domestic game to coach an England select side to an 88-76 win over Scotland.

With the Great Britain team set to compete at the forthcoming London Olympics, there is still a chance for players beneath the set-up to impress.

A tight first quarter ended with an 18-12 advantage for England and the lead ballooned to 43-25 by half-time.

However, the Scots continued to battle away and, with 10 minutes remaining, the deficit was reduced to just 10 points.

Worcester small forward David Watts netted the final basket with the last of his three triples in a 12-point contribution.

England captain Tayo Ogendengbe led their scorers with 25 points.

The international was a precursor at Birmingham’s National Indoor Arena to the BBL play-off final which Newcastle Eagles won 71-62 against Leicester Riders.

Veteran Eagles forward Charles Smith claimed the most valuable player award for his 21 points and nine rebounds.
