FORWARD Jamal Williams believes competition for places is keeping everyone on their toes at Worcester Wolves.

The University Arena side are once again riding high in the British Basketball League after finishing third last year and going on to add the play-offs to their BBL Trophy triumph.

Williams was part of that success, being named MVP in the Trophy final in Glasgow, and was quick to commit himself to the club during the summer.

Although Zaire Taylor and Will Creekmore were high-profile departures, director of basketball Paul James replaced them with Chavis Holmes and Robert Thurman, as well as retaining captain Alex Owumi.

Remi Dibo was also drafted in and Williams reckons Wolves, who also retained the services of Kalil Irving and Disraeli Lufadeju, are reaping the benefits.

"We had plenty of guys on the bench that have stepped up," Williams said. "Dizzy (Disraeli Lufadeju) has been amazing these last few games, playing really good defence.

"Then we have Kalil doing everything as far as guarding one through five is concerned and then Remi Debo is looking to score and be aggressive all the time.

"Everybody knows that they are going to play as coach James likes a big bench and likes to play a lot of guys.

"Everyone knows they are going to get shots and are all ready to contribute."

Williams, whose brother Kai left Wolves in the summer to join Swedish side KFUM Umea Basket, added: "I'm enjoying this year. Last year we were team-orientated and this time we are just as much team orientated.

"I think we just have more emphasis on running our sets and team defence."

Wolves were due to take on Sheffield Sharks last night and host Bristol Flyers at the arena on Friday.
