HEAD coach Paul James has admitted losses to Cheshire Phoenix and Sheffield Sharks have exposed some chinks in Worcester Wolves’ armour.

A run of five victories in six matches in the British Basketball League had created a buzz at the University of Worcester Arena as they remained on the coat-tails of Leicester Riders and leaders Newcastle Falcons.

However, a disappointing 94-85 defeat at Cheshire followed by a 85-75 loss at Sheffield last Friday has left James searching for answers from his players as they look to bounce back against Newcastle tomorrow night (7.30pm).

“There are glaring situations we certainly can improve on within the team,” he said.

“I think we were managing those situations by just getting by and getting some wins.

“But once you start playing the better teams, it is very hard to paper over those cracks and you can get somewhat exposed.

“Against Cheshire and Sheffield I think we got exposed in the end and it cost us the games.”

James said one of the main areas they need to improve was finding players who can step up during critical moments in matches.

“We have got to find the right combination of players to be on the court at the crucial stages,” he said.

“It is something myself and the coaching staff are trying to figure out because one week it has been a certain five and the next week it has been a different combination.

“It has been a bit of trial and error.

“But in the last two matches we were not able to do that successfully.”

Javier Mugica led the scoring with 16 points against Sheffield, while Orlan Jackman (12), Josh Cameron (11), Jay Couisnard (10) and the returning Perris Blackwell (10) also chipped in with double figures.

But the Wolves boss says he needs a member of his squad who can take the lead in matches.

“If you look at all the top teams, they have got players who can take the game by the scruff of the neck and say, ‘Follow me’,” James said.

“I think this is one of the most talented Wolves teams we have had in the past few years.

“But maybe it is up to a couple of players to be more vocal on court. Sometimes that is a bit foreign to players.

“We have got guys here who are being asked to be leaders on the court and being that spokesperson who can get the team together.

“So it is gradually coming but we want it to come sooner rather than later.”
