WORCESTER Wolves will be hoping to build on last week’s victory at Everton when they make the long journey to the south coast tomorrow to take on Worthing Thunder.
This is a vital British Basketball League game for the University of Worcester-based team as they try to build on the success of their last road trip which saw them register their first triumph of the season.
They were not able to beat Newcastle Eagles the following night so this game takes on extra importance as both the Thunder and Wolves are struggling at the wrong end of the table.
Worthing had nine seasons in the English League Division One, a level below the BBL, and only stepped up this season to the premier competition. They have started with two wins and four losses but have had some close encounters.
They are coached by Gary Smith who was well pleased with his team’s win at Sheffield last weekend. “We worked hard at closing down Sheffield’s shooters and when they came back at us as the game went on we held on really well.
“It is an important game for us against the Wolves. Anthony Paez is a stand-out player for them and if the shots are dropping well for him he will leave with a substantial personal score.”
“Justin Brown is the biggest player we will have come up against this year so far and it will be an immense struggle with our Latvian centre Janis Ivanovskis. I am looking forward to seeing who comes out on top in that personal battle.”
Wolves are hoping that the prime early season form of Paez and Brown continues. They were both included in the BBL all-star team of the week for their performances against Everton and Newcastle respectively and Worcester will need them to be at their best.
Wolves’ coach Skouson Harker said: “This is our only game for the next two weeks so it is imperative we try our hardest to bring two league points back to Worcester.”
