WARRIORS director of rugby Dean Ryan thought his side were ‘clinical and sharp’ in their comprehensive 42-12 victory against Bedford Blues.

“We had energy and were clinical and sharp,” said a delighted Ryan.

“The ball was difficult to hold on to and we still looked pretty sharp.

“Had it been a dry night I think it would have been mayhem, with the amount of breaks we made.

“I thought we were pretty good in that we pushed ourselves to play that way when the ball was tough to hold on to.

“This is a side that is really driven now and we have to make sure that our drive is allied to accuracy so that we can be really clinical in games.

“I am pleased to see the players come back and I think they have taken a step up and are playing at a level higher than where we were three weeks ago, and that’s exactly what we want and we want to keep driving things upwards.

“I am really pleased where we are and I think we are getting more accurate and more disciplined.”

He added: “I think we started with real pace but we overplayed a little bit and it invited Bedford back in.

“I thought their try at the tail-end of the first-half was because we did not exit properly.

“We had an opportunity to clear it down the touchline and we overplayed and left them in our half.

“Jake Sharp’s pretty lively at 10 and Bedford were always going to get something out of it.

“We learned from that and said we had to respect field position and, in the second-half, I thought we were better at it.”

Ryan was pleased with the contribution of Ryan Lamb, who made his first appearance of the season.

“I don’t think there was any doubt about Lamby,” said Ryan.

“Lamby is a great catalyst for things going on around him.

“You put a lot of pressure on Lamby and he exposes other things and he tends to find them.

“Having Ryan Mills outside him means he can just drop ball off and do magic things with it.

“Lamby is a gifted ball hander so he doesn’t go away.

“Bedford put a lot of pressure on him and he came up with stuff which I don’t think anyone else could have. That’s Ryan Lamb and there will be days when it doesn’t work.

“Mat Gilbert is the story of this club. He’s come here and had a chance. He turned up in the A-League and Bath didn’t want him. He’s come here and is playing in the Championship and he’s playing front level for us.”

Ryan said other squad players will be given a chance to prove themselves.

“We have to make sure we give people opportunities to respond,” said Ryan.

“Some people are playing really well and the likes of Ignacio Mieres, Alex Grove and Andy Symons want to play.

“We are picking a team to keep each other competing.”
