WARRIORS director of rugby Dean Ryan insists there were no fireworks from him at half-time in their 32-17 win at Bedford Blues.

Worcester trailed 17-0 at the interval before hitting back to score 32 unanswered points in the second period.

“We were really clinical at half-time because there was nothing we could say about the first-half which was going to help in the second-half,” said Ryan.

“There was no point in sounding off about it. You turnaround on that slope and you change all the plays.

“We were pretty calm in the dressing room — the players knew what they had put themselves up against and they had to go out and make sure they did what they needed to do.”

Ryan felt Warriors paid for their mistakes in the opening half.

“We weren’t very accurate and full credit to Bedford — we let them off the hook three or four times and they made us pay for it,” said Ryan.

“One of their tries was an intercept and the other was a turnover. In some ways we contributed to every point in the match.

“We had to tough it out — we didn’t play very well and lost our shape a little bit and we probably underestimated just how influential the slope of the pitch was.

“Even if we had lost we would have learned how we react when we’re in those tough corners. The bench came on and impacted crucially.”

He added: “There are lots of things in there — we just gave ourselves a horrendous start. If we hadn’t done that we would be talking about a 32-3 scoreline and I don’t think that would have been much of an issue.

“We know we are capable of playing some really good stuff but we have to make sure we start from the same point every day and start from the beginning and build in and earn the right to play.

“We went wide too early and paid the penalty.”

The Warriors chief admitted he was disappointed with the rash of penalties against his side, particularly at the scrum.

“I find it difficult when we have got a good contest and we have a good scrum that we seem to be on the end of a high number of technical elements,” he said.

“Bedford’s loosehead and their tighthead went to their knees about seven times in the second-half and there was not one penalty against them.

“We had three in straight succession in the first-half for our tighthead going to his knees and I just find that difficult to understand.

“I don’t think the law is being applied fairly. When we get a straight scrum contest we look pretty good. But we have to spend a lot of time getting through penalties before we get to that point.”

Bedford director of rugby Mike Rayer fumed: “Straight from the second-half kick-off we made an unbelievable error. We just kept giving penalties away.

“I can’t express my disappointment because we worked hard to get ourselves in that position and we gave Worcester a leg-up by constantly giving away penalties.”
