TONY Spreadbury, the head of Professional Game match officials, has this morning confirmed Wayne Barnes’ appointment to the Championship play-off final first leg between Worcester Warriors and Bristol at Ashton Gate.

The Worcester News revealed last night the experienced official would be in charge of the first leg on Wednesday (7.45pm).

"Clearly this game is a hugely significant occasion for both sides and we felt it was important to reflect that in the appointment of one of our best referees,” he said.

"Wayne's experience in the professional game speaks for itself, while his ability to effectively manage big pressure occassions is what makes him one of our standout officials.”

Commenting on the appointment, Steve Leyshon, Championship referee development manager said: "In Wayne Barnes we have a top-class official who has been selected for the World Cup. This game is extremely important and to have him oversee it is only right. He will be supported by an assistant referee who also has international experience and so we're delighted to be fielding such an experienced match officials team"
