An understandably terrible game of rugby but pleased to pick up the win. I really like Ben Howard.

Conditions massively played their part in the game, but I’m encouraged again by our stubbornness and battling qualities. Those French guys were huge, but we didn’t shy away from contact and took the game to them. Ben Howard is pushing extremely hard for a starting spot. He’s really come on this year and looks the part.Great under the high ball, even more of a powerful runner and looks to be even quicker and stronger. The scrum went really well in the first half and I thought Ryan Bower, Ben Sowrey and Joe Rees scrummaged well, but began to tire the second half. They did well and gave it a good go considering the standard of competition.

Ben Howard was the star player on a terrible day, with lots of mistakes. The game changed for better when Jean-Baptiste Bruzulier came on. I was surprised by some of the performances, especially in players who are meant to be playing for a first-team place. Ravai Fatiaki looked off the pace, as did Max Stelling and Charlie Mulchrone. Not the best game I have seen.

ROLLO

An attritional game by a team who had not played together before, it showed in attack but our defence was solid against a not especially adept attacking side.

Not sure how many of La Rochelle’s first XV played but they had bulk in the pack.

A word for Joe Rees who had to go back on when his replacement was carded, he looked completely spent when he came off for the second time, indeed he looked close to collapse.

Darren Prodger

Struggled up front against a big set of forwards but ground out a decent win in the end.

Stuart Perry

A win’s a win. Not a great game but then we have been a bit spoilt recently.
