A “relatively young” Worcester Warriors side will “give it a rip” at the Singha Premiership Sevens in Newcastle later this month.

The competition takes place at Kingston Park on July 30 and it could be the first step towards the Aviva Premiership for some Warriors youngsters.

Warriors narrowly missed out on booking a place at the series finals last term and will be hoping to go one better this time.

“We will put out a relatively young side but they will give it a rip,” said Warriors head coach Carl Hogg.

“It will be a good opportunity for them in a challenging tournament against other potentially young Premiership Sevens teams and good to see how players adapt and handle themselves.”

Warriors have been drawn in Group D and will get their tilt under way against Leicester Tigers (3.25pm) before taking on hosts Newcastle (4.20pm).

Warriors’ final game in their group is against Sale Sharks (4.50pm).

The clubs will be vying for two available spots for finals day at Wasps’ Ricoh Arena on August 7.

Hogg said: “I think the competition will involve some of the younger players and those at the top-end of the academies.

“As a young player, you tend to find you have the Singha Sevens as the first opportunity and then the LV (now Anglo-Welsh Cup) as potentially the next level of progression.

“Then, in our case, it would be the European Challenge Cup and the Aviva Premiership so there’s an avenue and a platform for players to work their way up through.”

Warriors are back in camp this week after a short break and will open their pre-season campaign with a trip to French giants ASM Clermont Auvergne next month.

The friendly takes place at the Jacques Lavédrine complex in Issoire on Friday, August 12 (7pm) and will conclude Warriors’ training camp in Tignes.

Hogg’s Warriors will then head to Championship outfit Jersey on Saturday, August 20 before travelling to Ireland to face Munster on Friday, August 26.
