BACKS coach Sam Vesty has spoken of his pride at witnessing the young guns he helped nurture at Worcester Warriors shine on the big stage.

The former England international joined Warriors in 2013 with the task of bringing through the club’s promising young backs.

Perry Humphreys, 21, Jamie Shillcock, 19, and Dean Hammond, 24, all worked closely with Vesty during his time as academy transition manager.

And the talented trio have all made an impact in the Aviva Premiership this term along with 21-year-old wing Josh Adams, who has also benefitted from Vesty’s guidance over the past two seasons.

“I am very proud of all those guys,” said Vesty, who stepped up to become backs coach in February 2015.

“You haven’t seen the hard work that has gone on for the last few years to get them there.

“But I was very confident they would take their opportunities because of all the effort they have put in.”

Adams (3), Hammond (4), Shillcock (4) and Humphreys (6) have made 17 appearances between them in the top flight this season.

Apart from Humphreys, the other three start in Worcester’s European Challenge Cup opener against Enisei-STM in Moscow tomorrow (1pm BST).

Humphreys was awarded Warriors’ player of the month for September after scoring tries against Gloucester, Bath and Sale Sharks.

“Perry is such a top bloke who puts everything out on to the pitch and I am so happy and proud of him as he deserves that award,” Vesty added.

“I think our back three who finished a couple of games have been 21, 21, and 19 and there would not be many clubs that could lay that claim, so the future looks rosy.”
