SOUTH African centre Wynand Olivier wants to remain at Worcester Warriors and is “busy in talks” over a new contract.

The 33-year-old lines up in the centre alongside new midfield partner Dean Hammond for today’s tough Aviva Premiership test against Exeter Chiefs at Sandy Park (4.30pm).

Olivier’s current deal with Warriors expires in the summer but the former Montpellier livewire is hoping to extend his stay at Sixways.

“I am in quite a good space,” said Olivier, who has scored twice in eight Premiership appearances this term. I enjoy it in Worcester and my wife is happy here too. I am busy in talks to see if we can get something sorted.

“I’ve had a good run and I would really like to stay on.

“We enjoy the city of Worcester and the people have been very helpful and very nice and we’ve made good friends inside and outside of rugby. It’s been a good year or so for us and we’d like to stay on.”

Olivier joined from French side Montpellier in October 2015 and formed a solid combination last season with Ryan Mills and Andy Symons.

He scored three tries in 18 appearances in his maiden campaign before tearing his hamstring in Warriors’ 50-12 crushing at Exeter.

And Olivier, who has played 38 Tests for the Springboks, is determined to be involved in the ‘challenges” facing Warriors.

“Worcester are definitely my first choice (for next season),” said Olivier, part of the Springboks World Cup-winning squad in 2007.

“I enjoy Worcester and there are lots of challenges for me and the team and that’s something I am looking forward to.

“It’s different at other clubs where they might be more established in the league.

“The difference with Worcester is they want to promote players from within, which I like.

“You see the youngsters who have been involved for a long time coming through to the first team and I really want to be a part of something like that.”

Olivier was a key part of a successful Blue Bulls squad in South Africa from 2005 to 2013, tasting Super Rugby and Currie Cup success.

“I had the opportunity to be involved with the Bulls back in the day,” recalled Olivier.

“We started that project in 2002 and to be involved with something like that again at Worcester would be very special.”
