POWERFUL lock Will Spencer insists Worcester Warriors will be gunning for revenge after their mauling by Exeter Chiefs less than three months ago.

Warriors were put to the sword in a humiliating 57-22 Aviva Premiership defeat at Sandy Park in November which is still fresh in their minds.

And Spencer, who has been in superb form, says Warriors “owe them one” and are “looking forward to putting it right” at Sixways today (3pm).

Spencer, 24, said: “As a rugby player, it hurts to lose a game and it hurts to lose like that (at Exeter) and you want to put it right.

“We know what Exeter are capable of doing to sides because they were relentless against us, won the collisions, were faster and dominated the game. That was a tough loss and it still hurts.

“We know we owe them one and are looking forward to putting it right.”

Oxford-born Spencer missed the trip to Exeter through injury but was outstanding in Warriors’ 24-18 home victory over star-studded Saracens last Saturday.

It was Spencer’s first top-tier start for Warriors and he continues his second-row partnership with Ireland legend and skipper Donncha O’Callaghan.

“It was a massive win and massive for our confidence to go toe-to-toe with a side like Saracens who are the benchmark for where we want to be,” said former Bath lock Spencer.

“To match them physically and to come out on top on the scoreboard was really good.

“The vibe around the place has been really positive and we haven’t had that too many times this season.

“It has been tough coming in on a Monday morning and picking ourselves back up after tough losses in the Premiership. Coming in after defeats to Bristol and Gloucester were tough.

“We know it’s just one game and we have to back it up because there’s no point in leaving it there.

“However, it showed us that our game-plan can work against the best.”

Spencer will line up against former Bath team-mate Olly Woodburn who has a good try-scoring record against Warriors.

However, Spencer’s other ex-Bath team-mate Ollie Devoto is not in Chiefs’ squad.

“I lived with Woodburn for a bit and was very friendly with Devoto as well,” recalled Spencer.

“They played brilliantly for Bath but thought they might get more of an opportunity somewhere else.

“They are exciting runners with the ball and have exciting ball skills and that’s how Exeter like to play.

“It will be fun and I am looking forward to doing battle.”

Warriors matched Sarries physically last weekend and Exeter-born fly-half Ryan Mills kicked all 24 of the hosts’ points in an impressive win.

“Saracens are relentless physicality and we knew we had to match that because that’s how they beat so many teams,” said Spencer.

“Exeter have got some big strike runners and big forwards who like to play at a high tempo.

“They keep the ball in play more than any other team in the Premiership so we can’t switch off.

“Our system has to be spot on because they are very intelligent rugby players and if we make a little mistake they will exploit it.

“We may have to defend for two or three minutes at a time and we can’t switch off even when we are struggling to breath.

“The tight five have to make sure we talk to each other and are switched on.

“If we are not at the same level as we were against Sarries then what happened to us in November could happen again.”
