WORCESTER Warriors’ chase for a fly half looks to be all but over, with director of rugby Gary Gold insisting he was satisfied with the strength and depth of his squad.

Experienced scrum-half Peter Stringer became the latest player to join Warriors after agreeing a six-month deal this week.

But Gold revealed he “did not anticipate” any more new faces arriving at Sixways ahead of the new season which starts on September 1.

With Worcester finishing just one place above the relegation zone last term, Gold spoke of the need to strengthen the number 10 position.

Promising stand-off Sam Olver joined from Northampton Saints to provide competition for the jersey along with Jamie Shillcock, Tom Heathcote and Ryan Mills.

But Worcester have been linked with several established names, including South African international Morné Steyn.

“We have got Sam, Jamie, Tom and Ryan who played at 10 quite a lot for us last season,” Gold said.

“We were looking for a 10 who complimented what we had if Millsy moves to 12 and Shilly moves to 15.

“But that didn’t happen, so we are where we are and we know what we have got.

“If Strings hadn’t come up we weren’t probably in a position to sign somebody up on a longer term contract, so that might not have happened.

“Recruitment is very much now about getting the right person who fits in with what our needs are and at this stage we haven’t found anybody.

“But in saying that we are so happy with what we have got at the moment.”

Speaking last month, chairman Bill Bolsover admitted Warriors had "walked away" from a couple of possible signings this summer.

Gold stressed there were financial constraints in recruiting players as Worcester look to stay below the Aviva Premiership’s salary cap which has grown to £7million for the 2017/18 campaign. Although top-flight clubs are allowed to have two players whose salaries sit outside the cap.

“We are always having a look (for new players) and that goes across four of five others positions,” Gold added.

“But that’s going to be dictated by whether we do have a round of injuries in certain positions.

“The cake is only so big as there is a salary cap and we have got to stay under that as well.

“We have probably given ourselves a bit of a buffer by making our squad a little bit smaller and you do have to plan for an eventuality that we don’t know is going to come which unfortunately is injuries.

“But we feel like we are in a good place at the moment as we have got strength and depth across the board, so we will wait and see how the season pans out.

“I don’t anticipate we will be bringing anybody else in at this moment.”
