SCRUM-half Peter Stringer remains part of Worcester Warriors’ plans despite his European Challenge Cup omission, insists head coach Carl Hogg.

The ex-Ireland international was a notable absentee from Worcester’s 41-man squad.

With Jonny Arr preferred at number nine, Stringer has made just one start and four substitute appearances for the Aviva Premiership strugglers since arriving on a six-month deal in July.

The 39-year-old, who turns 40 in December, faces further competition from fit-again Michael Dowsett while Francois Hougaard (adductor) and Luke Baldwin (bicep) could be back available within the next three weeks.

But Hogg, who is in charge of Warriors’ European programme, said his decision not to select Stringer had no bearing on the former Munster man’s future at the club.

“It is a different competition, which is away from the pressures and expectations of the Premiership,” said Hogg whose team beat Brive 30-20 at the weekend.

“There was a bit of rotation for Saturday’s game so we could look at what people can do and we will do something very similar next week away to Connacht where we will be looking to build on a home victory.”

Asked whether Warriors had held talks with Stringer over potentially extending his stay, Hogg replied: “That’s not something we will discuss publicly.”

Stringer has won 98 caps for Ireland and amassed 230 appearances at Munster where he made his debut in 1998.

He has also had spells at Saracens, Newcastle Falcons, Bath and Sale Sharks before joining Warriors as cover for Hougaard who was away on international duty with South Africa.

Although Stringer has not managed to establish himself in the starting line-up, Hogg said he had made a big impact at the club.

“Peter is the ultimate professional with the way he conducts himself Monday to Friday,” Hogg said.

“He is extremely fit, doesn't drink and has played at the top of the game for a number of years.

“He is a great ambassador and a great example for our young players of how to conduct yourself as a professional player.

“We do have the opportunity now with Jonny being fit and Mikey coming back from injury, so it is about balancing the workload across the squad.

“But there is no doubt Peter has had a huge influence on the group.”
