FLY-half Jono Lance and scrum-half Jonny Arr have helped Worcester Warriors to become less “predictable” in attack, says head coach Carl Hogg.

The half-back duo received high praise from Hogg after starring in Warriors’ 41-35 defeat at Harlequins in the Aviva Premiership last Saturday.

Although he struggled from the tee, Lance set up four of the six tries in a man-of-the-match showing at The Stoop.

And Hogg was also keen to highlight the contribution of Arr who he believed made some “very smart decisions”.

“We have been a little bit too predictable at times in the early part of the season,” Hogg said.

“But now we have got real balance with our attack and kicking strategy and that’s credit to Jono and Jonny.

“We talked about making good decisions in the middle third of the field and I thought we did that very well, especially in the first half.

“Jono and Jonny made some very smart decisions of where to play and when to kick so I thought we looked like a really balanced side.”

Leading 18-17, Warriors were forced into a change at half-time after outside centre Wynand Olivier picked up a hamstring problem.

Hogg insisted he had no choice but to move the versatile Lance into midfield and bring Tom Heathcote on at fly-half.

Worcester suffered a further blow on 52 minutes when Arr left the field on a stretcher following a head injury.

“We had no choice (but to move Lance to centre),” Hogg said.

“We lost Wynand at half-time with a hamstring issue so we had to rejig the midfield.”

Quins capitalised on this disruption as they scored three converted tries to move 38-18 in front with 15 minutes to go.

But the visitors fought back as Dean Hammond scored twice and Jack Singleton touchdown to secure two losing bonus points.

“No (I didn’t lose hope) because we played with ambition,” Hogg said.

“I thought our shape was much better as we played with width and created opportunities.

“I thought we would always get chances to score four tries, but to go and score six was outstanding.

“There are some good elements coming through, but we have got to build on them.”

Warriors will now focus their attentions on the Anglo-Welsh Cup as they host Sale Sharks on Friday (7.45pm) before travelling to Quins a week on Sunday.

But Hogg said his players were already looking forward to returning to league action on Saturday, November 18 when they take on Northampton Saints at Sixways.

“We have had some tough games at home with Exeter, Wasps and Saracens coming to Sixways so it was difficult to pick up points,” he said.

“The Premiership is about winning your home games so we are looking forward to Northampton coming to town in a couple of weeks.

“We will introduce one or two young players in the Anglo-Welsh Cup and rest some of our senior players that have been on duty for the last six or seven weeks.

“But we are looking forward to that next block of Premiership games.”
