AN international basketball player, studying at the University of Worcester, will attend a selection camp for the Great Britain team this summer.

If Andrew Wallace is selected, he will play in the Euro-pean Championships in Macedonia in the GB under 20s team. This could be a stepping stone to a possible place in the 2012 Olympic Games line-up.

Wallace, who plays for Worcester Wolves in the British Basketball League, is studying sports coaching through a scholarship at the University. He has already been representing England for the past three years.

“To play for England is a great honour,” he said. “But to play for Great Britain is so much more competitive. I am so proud and grateful to have this chance,” said Wallace.

The selection camp will be held this summer with the European Championships taking place from July 16-26.

“I am really looking forward to going and I will be working hard to get selected,” said Wallace. “It would be amazing to play in the European Cham-pionships.”

The 18-year-old has also been asked to attend the first ever British Basketball Skills Camp, which is a pilot project running this week.

Wallace secured a full scholarship at the University of Worcester in September 2008 allowing him to pursue his passion for basketball while also gaining a degree.

“It’s great to be able to combine my basketball with studying at Worcester,” he said. “The University has given me a lot of support.”

Mick Donovan, the University’s Head of Institute of Sport and Exercise Science, said: “The University of Worcester has a proven track record with scholarships. These schemes offer potential elite players the opportunity to combine study and play.

“At Worcester we are committed to helping potential performers at all levels to follow their dreams,” he added.
