Win Worcester Warriors Aviva Premiership Match Tickets

Billy hails firepower of Warriors forwards

BILLY McGinty heaped praise on fellow Worcester Warriors coach Tony Windo after the Sixways side’s pack out-gunned London Irish to claim a 19-9 LV= Cup victory.

The visitors’ eight found themselves either eating mud or being marched backwards on numerous occasions and defence coach McGinty said this gave Worcester the platform to go on and win the game.

He said: “Tony will be very happy with the way the set piece went.

“The line-out functioned well and the scrum was solid as we expect.”

The former Great Britain rugby league international, was also impressed with the way Welsh referee David Bodilly officiated the match.

He explained: “I thought the referee had a good game, a lot of the decisions were a true reflection of what was happening.

“A lot of referees wouldn’t have given a penalty when the ball is thrown away, the same for backchat.

“They just leave it, so I thought he was good and gained the respect of the players.”

Warriors made a flying start to the game with wing Chris Pennell touching down for the only try of the game after just six minutes.

McGinty thought Worcester’s strong start was one of the key reasons they went on to win the game.

He said: “We played exceptionally well in the first 30 minutes.

“There was some great rugby and we need to build on that. Every win is a good one.

“Since we have finished the Guinness Premiership, we’ve tried to rest people and last week was the first time we came back together as a team and we were disappointed.

“We were very ring rusty and it’s always difficult when you break up a bit of momentum. But I was pleased to get the result against London Irish.”

McGinty added: “I thought Greg King did very well, he ran a great line for us to score our first try as he pulled defenders in.

“When you get a win, you gain some confidence and that will help us as we aim towards next week’s game.

“Hopefully, after Saturday’s win, we will feel more confident about ourselves and take it forward.

“But there is still more to work on and we never stop working.

“We’ve got quite a good record against Saracens so hopefully we can go down there and build on what we did against Irish.

“It is a great opportunity for us to go down and play at Wembley.

“Not too many people get that chance and we will look to take it and get a good win and performance.”
