DEFENSIVE linchpin Rob Higgitt is Richard Hill’s second signing since becoming head coach of Worcester Warriors.

The tough-tackling centre, who scored 20 tries in 111 games for Bristol where he worked closely with Hill, has penned a one-year deal and follows hot on the heels of the new boss’ first signing, scrum-half Andy Williams.

Higgitt, 28, was released by Llanelli Scarlets at the end of last season after 28 matches in an injury-hit two years and Hill is delighted with his latest acquisition.

He said: “Rob is the ultimate professional and one of the most dedicated players I’ve ever had the pleasure of working with so I’m delighted he will join us for next season.

“He is extremely focused and someone that other players look up to because of his work ethic and superb attitude. Rob literally eats, breathes and speaks rugby.

“He is also the master of defence and when I worked with him at Bristol we used the blitz defence to really press teams. He was our leader who set the example for others to follow.

“I know Rob really well after working with him throughout my time at Bristol, I saw him develop in the Championship and become a really top Premiership player. Every season he plays with confidence and looks to prove himself again, that is exactly the type of character we want at Warriors.”

Higgitt started at Ruthin and stayed until the age of 18 when he left for the University of Bath.

While playing for the university team, Higgitt was spotted by Bristol and signed to their under 21 side.

Welsh-born Higgitt, who also played for Caerphilly and Ebbw Vale, moved to the Scarlets in 2008 and memorably scored the final try at Stradey Park that year.

He was part of the Scarlets team that defeated Warriors in the LV= Cup last season and captained them on several occasions.

Higgitt said: “I worked with Richard at Bristol and know the type of culture and atmosphere he will create — that’s a big pull for me to join Warriors and you want to be a part of that.

“He creates an environment where you are determined to contribute and be part of a success story, you want to bring a new dimension and make an impact.

“I know he will be a success at Warriors and so it’s exciting to link up with him again. I know how he operates and what he demands from the players and his staff.”
