Hill feels there are areas to improve

RICHARD Hill admits there is still work to do after Worcester Warriors kicked off their Championship campaign with a 48-3 drubbing of local rivals Birmingham and Solihull at Sixways.

The former England scrum-half was concerned by his side’s flimsy first-up tackling and, although Bees were prevented from scoring a try, he said defensive standards need to improve.

The Warriors boss said: “It was pleasing to get six tries and to keep a clean sheet.

“Birmingham were as good as we thought they would be having watched them in pre-season.

“They entered into the spirit of the game and, overall, I thought it was very entertaining to watch. There were some good patches from Worcester but enough for a coach to go back and say, ‘We have got a bit of work to do’.”

He added: “We have to work on our defence — that might seem a bit silly because we kept a clean sheet but that was down to last-ditch tackling.

“I think the team didn’t disagree when I said to them in the huddle afterwards that I thought it was a four out of 10 performance.

“They admitted they have got some work to do but it was the first time that XV had been put together. It was a good start, though. We can build on it and get better.”
