DEVASTATING braces of tries from Andy Goode and Tom Arscott powered table-topping Worcester Warriors to an emphatic 48-3 bonus-point victory over league new boys Esher in the Championship.

England ace Goode grabbed his first try for the club before a stunning second-half show of running rugby saw Warriors pull well clear to run in five tries and leave London with a maximum haul.

Three scores in 12 minutes at the start of the second period saw Goode — who finished with 24 points — grab his second and Arscott strike twice, with his first a sublime solo effort that started deep inside his own half.

Speedster Marcel Garvey finally got the try he deserved — after having two earlier efforts ruled out — before Graham Kitchener raced in for the sixth score.

Head coach Richard Hill made three changes to his starting line-up for a first ever trip to Esher with Adam Black and Greg Rawlinson back in the pack and Alex Crockett restored to the centre. Former Sixways scrum-half Clive Stuart-Smith started the game for Esher, but wing Jonny Hylton was ruled out through injury.

The home side showed their intent and willingness to run from the opening whistle with wing Sam Uplh making big yards before spilling in the tackle as he looked to off-load with men on his shoulder.

A penalty at the scrum gave Goode the chance to make touch and set up a first attack of the game from Warriors. Aleki Lutui found his man with the throw but a long floated pass from Goode was adjudged forward as Arscott streaked away to the line.

Worcester should have been ahead on six minutes when the ever-menacing Arscott cut a superb line to break clear and find James Collins. The quick flanker raced towards the line only for his final pass to go behind Miles Benjamin and then to ground.

The visiting pack showed early power to shunt Esher back before a penalty for not releasing in the tackle gave Goode the simplest kick to open the scoring on nine minutes. However, two quick-fire penalties from referee Tim Wigglesworth, the second against Neil Best in front of the posts, gave Ulph a kick to level the scores.

Garvey thought he had scored on 24 minutes when Worcester moved the ball left. The wing took the ball out wide, after Kitchener’s initial burst sucked in men, and stretched for the line only for referee Wigglesworth to award a knock-on.

Worcester lost Crockett to the sin bin for a late tackle on Stuart-Smith, but Ulph’s penalty came back off the right post.

It looked like being a frustrating opening period for Worcester until Collins took matters into his own hands. A brilliant line-break sent him clear and as he took ball into contact he neatly off-loaded to Goode, who raced in for his first try for Warriors.

Crockett was back in the action and in return Esher were a men down as Wigglesworth lost patience with the home side at the breakdown and sent Shawn Renwick for a cool down as Goode slotted the penalty for a 13-3 half-time lead.

Kitchener put Warriors on the front foot early in the second-half as he tore past bodies to go over the halfway line in style. Dale Rasmussen and prop Bruce Douglas then combined before Garvey touched down in the far corner only for celebrations this time to be halted for a foot in touch.

The mounting pressure was now beginning to take its toll on Esher and this time Rasmussen took several men to pull him up short before the ball was spun down the line and Goode danced around the last man to score before adding the conversion.

With Hill urging his team forward from the touchline, Worcester scored a third as Arscott produced a moment of magic as he picked up a loose kick inside his own half and pressed the gas to ghost past four men before tearing in behind the posts to a huge ovation.

Worcester had their tails up with Andy Williams showing alert skills to take a chip ahead and put Esher in trouble in their own half with a drilled grubber. Stolen line-out saw Warriors rumble up and this time it was Arscott who dotted down for a bonus point.

Ed Shervington bashed past men on arrival into the game before fellow replacement Tevita Taumoepeau popped up on the wing and took out several support staff as he was bundled out.

It seemed only a matter of time before Worcester struck again and it duly arrived when speedster Garvey took advantage of a mismatch in midfield to power past tiring forwards from 40 metres.

Higgitt hobbled off with a knee problem as Worcester opted to play the final 10 minutes a man down, but they still dominated as Bowley had a third Warriors try of the afternoon ruled out for a knock on.

However, Bowley made amends as he broke the Esher defensive line before the alert Jake Abbott kept playing, while others stopped for a home knock-on, and brilliant ball skills from Crockett saw him flick a final pass to send Kitchener over.
