Scot Grove eyes full cap after ‘A’ side call-up

ALEX Grove has his eye on reclaiming a place in the full Scotland squad after being named in his nation’s ‘A’ side to face England Saxons at Galashiels in a mouth-watering Calcutta Cup curtain-raiser on Friday, February 3 (7.30pm).

The Worcester Warriors academy product, who has three senior caps for his country, has been included in Michael Bradley’s initial 15-man group on the back of his impressive form this term as a mainstay of Richard Hill’s Aviva Premiership midfield.

The 24-year-old outside-centre said: “I am quite pleased to still be in the frame.

“All I can do is put in decent performances and, if there are a few injuries in the main squad, maybe I will get a look-in.

“I didn’t make the World Cup squad and was disappointed with that, but I played Scotland ‘A’ games so I knew I was still in their thoughts.

“They have been watching the Aviva Premiership games and I have played in each league match so far this term.

“Andy Robinson was at Sixways for our game with Gloucester and, in the Premiership, you are always on the radar. I didn’t know he was there and that was probably for the best.

“I was told after the game that he had been there, which was nice as we’d played well and won the game!”

The Scotland ‘A’ squad will convene for training at Murrayfield on Monday, before the group will be supplemented by members of the full squad for the opening two rounds of the RBS Six Nations Championship.

Should Grove feature against the Saxons, he may go head-to-head with Warriors team-mate Matt Mullan.

He added: “I’m not sure if he will be playing against us as they have a game this weekend, so I don’t know if Matt will play both games, but we’ve played against each other before.”
