NIALL Annett insists there are “no glaring issues” with Worcester Warriors’ defence despite conceding more than 100 points in their last two games.

And the hooker has vowed to show Warriors’ true colours when they tackle Leicester Tigers at Welford Road on Saturday (3pm).

Warriors have been left to lick their wounds after crushing defeats to Exeter Chiefs (50-12) and Wasps (54-35) this month.

Annett admitted they have “let themselves down” in recent weeks, but he is adamant those performance were not a reflection of their game.

“There is no doubt we have got a good defence when we get everything right,” he said.

“But if you are a couple of per cent off you are going to end up in trouble and we have maybe been guilty of that.

“Against the top teams you can get found out slightly more. Wasps are probably the best attacking team in the Premiership and Exeter are probably relatively close to being second or third best attacking team.

“If you are not on your mettle you will end up conceding a lot of points. A couple of those tries we conceded against Wasps were not truly reflective of a defensive performance as they can be down to luck or being unlucky.

“There are no glaring issues with our defence, but I just think those teams are very good and we have got to improve.

“You never want to concede 40 or 50 points, so we need to go out and perform to the best of our ability to try and correct that.”

With Bath moving seven points clear in ninth in the Aviva Premiership, 10th placed Warriors are unlikely not to improve on their league position.

But Annett firmly believes motivation is still burning brightly as they attempt to claim the scalp of European Champions Cup semi-finalist Leicester.

“There is excitement and eagerness (ahead of Saturday’s game),” he said.

“We have got to put things right and Dean (Ryan) has been challenging us to put in better performances now that we have not got a huge amount of external motivation.

“We don’t have the pressure of relegation or the pressure of potentially qualifying for Europe.

“We have to drive standards from within ourselves and I think we are capable of that.”

The Irishman, who is aiming to get the nod ahead of Georgia international Jaba Bregvadze, added: “Welford Road is one of the bedrocks of English rugby and it is somewhere I am really looking forward to going to play, if I am lucky enough to get in the mix.

“To go down there trying to take on Leicester head-on is going to be an amazing opportunity.”
