FORMER Worcester Warriors flanker and ex-England Sevens star Jake Abbott has called time on his playing career at the age of 28.

Worcester born-and-bred Abbott joined Warriors’ mini junior set up aged six before going on to become a popular figure at Sixways.

After breaking into the first team in October 2008, the former Worcester Sixth Form College student made 72 appearances, scoring 16 tries.

He also helped Warriors secure promotion from the Championship in 2011 and made his name on the England Sevens circuit.

But his career was blighted by a injuries as he was ruled out for the majority of the 2013/14 Aviva Premiership campaign with anterior cruciate ligament damage.

With opportunities limited at Warriors, Abbott decided to move to America after agreeing a three-year deal with Griffins Rugby in Dallas, Texas in 2014.

However, the dynamic forward announced on social media his “huge ride” of a playing career had come to an end.

“From six years old my dad took me every Sunday to Worcester mini juniors, I hated the wet and cold weather, cried most times someone tackled me but eventually realised how I loved this game,” Abbott said.

“Rugby has given me my whole childhood to becoming an adult, my best friends, every opportunity and adventure, a chance to be part of something special and values I will carry through life forever.

“A beautiful sport that demands the highest physical efforts and truly creates the most committed, respectful culture.

“Thank you to everyone who has ever supported me on and off the field throughout my career so far.

“Dad, thank you for being my biggest supporter since day one.

“Mum, thank you for always coming to watch despite hating every tackle I made and nursing me back from every injury.

“@pixieabbott thank you for being my rock through all the ups and downs.

“I'm turning the page onto the next chapter and can't wait for our next adventure with @pixieabbott And @myladbilly.”
