WORCESTER Warriors have suffered a major set-back after it emerged Chris Pennell will miss the start of the season with a neck injury.

The England international has not travelled to Tignes for Warriors' pre-season camp as he recovers from the blow.

It is not known when the 29-year-old is likely to return, but Warriors say he will not be back for their Aviva Premiership opener against Saracens at Twickenham on Saturday, September 3.

Warriors' high performance director Nick Johnston says Pennell, who has played 165 games for the club, will be working with their medical team to get him back to full fitness.

"It is disappointing to lose someone of Chris' ability and experience but our continued focus on squad development means we have players who can take the opportunity to step up,” he said.

"Chris is working closely with our Medical Department to ensure he can return to fitness as soon as possible."

Pennell, who made 23 appearances, scoring two tries last term, will now miss Warriors’ entire pre-season schedule which begins against ASM Clermont Auvergne on Friday night.

However, his injury will provide an opening for Ben Howard who has been battling with Pennell for the number 15 jersey for the past few seasons.
