WORCESTER Warriors’ “shining light” François Hougaard is set to make a surprise return to the Aviva Premiership bottom club.

Director of rugby Gary Gold revealed the “talismanic” and “world class” scrum-half had been released by South Africa following their crushing 57-0 defeat to New Zealand last weekend.

Hougaard is expected to arrive next week and could be in line for Warriors’ home clash against Saracens on Friday, September 29.

The 29-year-old’s impending arrival will be a major boost for Worcester who are pointless at the foot of the table after three successive defeats.

Gold said: “There has been a little bit of good news today as we heard François is going to return. It is not good news for him, but it is good news for us.

“I think he will be back next week, so that’s a small shining light on the horizon.”

Hougaard has been an influential figure at Sixways over the past two seasons as he has proved a catalyst in helping Warriors avoid relegation.

Since joining Worcester in February 2016, the number nine has scored five tries in 19 appearances and established himself as a firm fans’ favourite.

Hougaard will also bolster Gold’s depleted side after being hit with a series of injuries, including scrum halves Jonny Arr (concussion) and Luke Baldwin (bicep).

“He will be a positive boost to the squad and the boys in terms of competition and what he brings,” Gold said.

“It comes at a good time with Jonny being injured and with Luke still being out.

“He is a talismanic and world class player.

“He loves playing for the club and he plays without the pressure of Test match rugby. He comes here, enjoys himself and plays pretty well.

“It will be great to have him back, but I will be equally excited when Marco (Mama) or Dewald (Potgieter) come back as you just want your players available to you.”

Hougaard was not due back until October 7 when the Rugby Championships comes to an end. He started in the Springbok’s heavy loss to New Zealand last Saturday.

“They didn’t play very well on the weekend,” added Gold, who has previously been assistant coach at South Africa.

“But I don’t think anyone played well, so I think he has been OK, but I don’t know why they have chosen to release him.”
