PERRY Humphreys believes he became a victim of Worcester Warriors’ “predictable” brand of rugby at the start of the season.

And the frustrated wing is determined to show what Warriors are missing when they host Oyonnax in the European Challenge Cup today (3pm).

Humphreys has made seven appearances for Worcester this season with all three of his tries coming in the Aviva Premiership.

But after his try-scoring display in Warriors’ 41-35 victory over Harlequins in late October the 23-year-old found himself out of Gary Gold’s first team.

He was rested for Worcester’s two Anglo-Welsh Cup games before missing out on a place against Northampton Saints, Leicester Tigers and Sale Sharks in the league.

During that period the Sixways side notched 19 tries and Humphreys feels his side’s change to a more attack-minded approach will suit his game style too.

“Compared to last year I have not excelled,” Humphreys said. “But I think that was down to the brand of rugby we were playing.

“In the first four games we kicked the ball away a lot so there was not much opportunity whereas now we are attacking a bit more and wingers are getting more chances.

“The boys have shown that attacking is one of our strengths. We have got a great back-line so when we do come alive we are really good.

“It did work for us for the majority of last season.

“I do think we need to manipulate defence by playing a bit more and being less predictable.

“When we are kicking the ball all the time teams were just holding people back and knowing what we were going to do whereas now we have got a running threat which opens up the back field.”

Josh Adams leads the club’s try-scoring charts with seven in 11 games.

Dean Hammond has crossed the whitewash six times in eight outings while all of Bryce Heem’s points came in a hat-trick showing against Northampton last month.

“Boys like Josh and Bryce have done well and Deano played well in the Anglo Welsh Cup so competition is good in the squad,” Humphreys said.

“I have been disappointed over the last few weeks but this is my chance to show why I should be in the Premiership side.”

Humphreys had a stellar 2016-17 campaign as he scored four tries in 15 league appearances.

His performances caught the eye of national boss Eddie Jones and he received an “out-of-the-blue” phone call to attend an England training camp in May.

But Humphreys insists any hopes of a return to the international set-up are slim if he does not produce the goods again for Worcester.

“Last year I lived in a house with Christian Scotland-Williamson and Mike Daniels and we all said in pre-season we needed to get one club game,” Humphreys said.

“I ended up exceeding that as I was fortunate with a couple of boys getting injured and I took my opportunity.

“I went to the England training squad for a few days which was good.

“But it came out of the blue as I was not expecting it.

“It was tough as it was like a mini pre-season but I thought I did alright.

“I do (want to get back there) but I need to worry about getting into Worcester’s team first.”
