RICHARD Hill’s search for back-row reinforcements goes on — but the Sixways head coach is adamant he won’t rush into signing a player just for the sake of it.

The Warriors chief recognises the need to augment his resources at the back of the pack ahead of a punishing Aviva Premiership return, but will bide his time until the right man comes along.

If that player fails to materialise, Hill insists he would be happy for Worcester to tackle their top-flight comeback with the squad he already has at his disposal.

The former England scrum-half said: “I have 36 in the squad and I am settled with that. if another player came along that we thought would be really good for the club then we have the capacity to put an offer in. It would have to be the right person though.

“I’m not desperately going out to try and find a player, but if someone became available we could certainly put an offer in to them.

“I am still possibly looking for a number eight —that is the main area of focus for us at the moment — but we still have two very good eights in the squad. It is just that the back row is such an attritional place in the Aviva Premiership, so we may well look to bring in another back row.”

After losing out on the services of Argentinian international winger Gonzalo Camacho, with the player poised to instead join Exeter Chiefs, Hill revealed he only expressed a passing interest in the versatile back.

The Sixways boss had lined up Camacho as an outside-centre, but the deal never progressed as far as Hill talking to the player face-to-face — something he insists on before signing anyone.

He explained: “I don’t think we are short at outside-centre. We had a call to say Gonzalo was available and he was inexpensive. Sometimes you have to make a move when a player comes up cheaply.

“I did not meet with him and I would never sign a player I hadn’t met face-to-face, looked in the eye and got to know a little bit.

“I spoke to (Quins director of rugby) Conor O’Shea about him and he certainly made an impact at the end of last season.

“However, he is going back to Argentina and won’t be available until after the World Cup, which is not that attractive to us.”
