HAVING watched the video back from the weekend’s win over Plymouth Albion, it is clear we are our own worst enemies.

There have been very few occasions where teams have been creative and troubled us through their own doing.

We are making basic errors allowing teams to build confidence and momentum. This will stop and, when it does, someone is going to take a hammering.

There were, however, positives to take from Saturday. Firstly, our scrum was dominant.

Our pack provide the backs with a fantastic platform to play from and this was again true against Plymouth.

Secondly, some of our systems in defence did work better. It may not have been obvious to all on the day as we are nowhere near where we want or need to be.

However, some small changes and decision-making processes we have been working on were much improved. It was a step in the right direction. Thirdly, our bench made a very good impact with the likes of Chris Fortey adding an aggressive edge.

Lastly, it can only be seen as a positive to have won with a bonus point.

We remain top of the table and certainly have no plans on shortening the gap between ourselves and the rest.

We travel up to Rotherham for Saturday’s game well aware of the powerful pack they possess after our encounter earlier this season at Sixways.

We perhaps could consider ourselves lucky to have escaped with a 32-25 win despite our superb display in the first 20 minutes. This cements the fact that the Titans will raise their game from previous outings, especially in front of a home crowd.

Those who witnessed our last-minute escape will be well aware of the conservative tactics Rotherham played that day.

Having seen some of their more recent games at home, it is clear they look to play more rugby.

We also know heading to Clifton Lane will be a huge physical challenge. The forward pack selected will be prepared to put their bodies on the line up front, making a solid platform to attack from.

The Titans, currently placed seventh, will be looking to bounce back to winning ways after suffering defeat to Bedford, conceding six tries along the way.

Our attack will hopefully match that kind of potency. I have every confidence in the boys getting a result.

We continue to search to become the best players we can be. I can honestly say I have never known the boys to train so hard and we cannot fault the effort they are putting in.

Not only are we putting things right from a rugby perspective, but the background elements are also falling into place. We are extremely fortunate to be working with a top nutritionist to make us fitter, leaner and able to perform better for longer on the pitch.

Now, as a back who prefers to run with the ball in open space, I have a huge amount of respect for front-row players. Thankfully, my genetics would never allow me to play there, but the guys that do are worth their weight in gold — and that’s a lot of gold by the way!

Some of these players are currently undertaking an extremely difficult diet to cut down body fat. The diet involves completely cutting out carbohydrates, the body’s main energy source, despite maintaining a full training load.

Generally, as a squad, we have seen vast gains in body composition. Looking ahead towards the play-offs, we will see a squad in better physical shape than we have ever been.
