6:10pm Sunday 30th October 2011 in Match Reports

COVERING Worcester Warriors can be a tricky task at times.
Despite all the will in the world on my behalf, they regularly make it difficult for me to report glowingly on how well they have played.
It goes without saying that we at the Worcester News want Warriors to do well and be successful — that would be great for the city and a richly-deserved reward for Cecil Duckworth’s unwavering support of the club.
However, when the team comes up with such a ridiculously brainless defeat as they managed against Wasps, it is difficult to search for the positives.
If Worcester are to fare well this term — or at the least avoid relegation — they absolutely have to close out games like this.
Winning at home will be crucial to their hopes and, having got their noses in front, to concede such a slack late penalty, which ultimately cost them the game, was unforgivable.
It then becomes a case of ‘damned if you do and damned if you don’t’ as a rose-tinted report of the match simply angers the already-frustrated fans, while a negative critique inevitably ends with messages from the players and ‘quiet words in the ear’ from coaches telling me I am not being positive and backing the team as I should.
Prior to the 46-13 defeat to Bath at The Rec in the LV= Cup, I mused on Twitter that, given the power-packed line-up the hosts had named, it could be a tough afternoon for the second-string Worcester side.
Almost immediately, several players were on my case for writing the team off before they had even taken the field.
My comment was an honest assessment of the game and it proved to be fairly accurate as Bath ran in seven tries in a one-sided contest.
On the other hand, I only have to mention in passing that I thought Joe Carlisle has played well in a match, which incidentally he did against Wasps, to open myself up to abuse from the minority of Warriors fans who will never appreciate the fly-half’s obvious talents.
That comment alone will guarantee me a hostile reception next time I show my face in a certain pub frequented by a host of Worcester fans!
I pride myself on providing impartial coverage of Warriors’ matches and I’ll continue to do that.
I would love nothing more than to report on Worcester conquering all in front of them and claiming a Heineken Cup place but, until that happens, you’ve got to give me something to work with lads.

On Friday night, with my head hung low in despair, I turned to my loyal warriors supporting friend who I've shared season ticket seats with for many many seasons and said "what do we do now?" Hi reply was simple... "keep coming back". And so many of us faithful will. But the management can't continue to expect a cottage club mentality where no one dares criticise the efforts (or lack thereof) of the individuals, the squad or the management. Worcester have been playing with the big dogs for some time now, and they need to learn how to wee-wee in the tall grass. And part of that learning curve involves being pee'd on by passionate and honest supporters who are pee'd off!
One the however that the club will do well to remember is that it is those fans who moan the loudest before and after games that also cheer the loudest at them!
