WARRIORS are considering bolstering their backroom set-up with the addition of full-time coaches, according to Sixways executive chairman Cecil Duckworth.

Worcester’s long-standing benefactor has revealed the club have no plans to sack head coach Richard Hill, inset, despite admitting this season has been ‘disappointing’.

Discussions are ongoing between the Warriors powers-that-be about how to improve matters for next season, but no definitive outcome has yet been reached.

Duckworth said: “Everything is on the table, but we don’t have it in our plans to replace Richard and our coaching staff at the moment, but that is something we do have to look at.

“Or, the other question, is do we add to what we have and that is also something we are discussing, but we are not in any hurry to do that as we are safe in the league.

“What needs to change to ensure we have a better season than this next term is the subject of a big discussion at the moment and we haven’t reached a conclusion on that just yet.

“The original plan way back was to bring in a director of rugby above Richard, but he believed that was something he could take on and we didn’t see bringing someone else in as the answer.

“However, we are looking at full-time coaching roles as some of the players have said to me it is OK for people to be coming in here and there but it would be helpful for them to have more sessions.

“That is definitely something we are looking at, but I don’t think our attack coach Mathieu Rourre is prepared to come more often.”

Duckworth also revealed he would have liked to have retained the services of Wasps-bound fly-half Andy Goode in a player-coaching capacity.

He explained: “Andy staying on in a player-coaching role similar to what Mike Tindall does at Gloucester was a possibility, but Andy is probably not quite ready to go into coaching at this stage.

“He is a great character and he has done some great things for us, but the point comes when you have to make a decision about the future and we felt we should probably make a change.”

The failure to hold on to crown jewels Matt Kvesic and Matt Mullan has angered Duckworth, as has the club’s dire away form.

He added: “We are a long way down the road as far as our new signings are concerned, but I am very disappointed we have not been able to retain our top academy-produced players like the two Matts, as well as Joe Carlisle. That has been a real disappointment for me and, I’m sure, to our supporters too.

“We have made some progress though — we have scored more tries and we have picked up a try-scoring bonus three times.

“However, we still haven’t won enough games and our away form has been very disappointing, so this season has been a mixed bag so far.

“We have not been very good after 75 minutes in games either, so it could have been a lot, lot better — overall we have to be disappointed with this season.

“We will have an overview into our performance, but not just yet, to see where we can put these things right.”
