COMMENT: Chance to show your pride in city COMMENT: Chance to show your pride in city

IT IS all too easy in this day and age to moan and complain about the world around us. But it is just as easy to turn words into action and do something about problems in our communities.

That is why we today announce the launch of our Take Pride in Worcester campaign.

The Worcester News has joined forces with the city council in a bid to clean up our streets. And we need your help.

This newspaper receives plenty of correspondence in print and online from Worcester people concerned about the state of their city.

From today we give you the chance to do something about it.

From today we want local people to show their pride in Worcester.

There are a number of ways in which you can help the campaign. Most importantly, don’t drop litter.

It is all too easy to criticise the council if Worcester’s streets are dirty and litter-strewn.

But the reality is it is not the council that fills the city’s streets with rubbish. It is a significant minority of Worcester’s citizens.

You can also help this important campaign by reporting ‘grot spots’ via our special hotline. The council has pledged to clean up these areas within 48 hours of receiving a report. We will publish before and after photographs.

You could also organise a clean up of your community. The council will provide all the equipment you need for this and we will be on hand to record your efforts.

From today and throughout the summer our campaign gives local people the chance to help get Worcester looking better than ever.

We know the vast majority of people in this city are hugely proud of Worcester.

Now you have the chance to show that pride.

Where's the link to the "grot spot hotline"?

Is it email, phone number etc, there is no mention in the article and the rst of this page is just the usual ads.

I totally agree that the city needs cleaning up and everyone has to do their part to make sure this happens but after the report in yesterdays WN that the county council will be depending on an army of volunteer carers to help with the elderly and disabled we are now expected to volunteer to clean the streets. What about getting the long term unemployed who accept their jobseekers allowance every week to turn up and do this work? There is an army of street cleaners out there too. Also the individuals who are punished with community service could be put to work on this too. This would surely increase the required workforce ten fold.

I agree with the comments about the offenders being required to clean up.
I recall a particular Sheriff in America not only made the offenders clean up the streets but that they should wear distinct overalls so that passers bye would see them and hopefully it would also shame the offenders.
Boy could we do with such people here. Can you imagine the corrupt Bankers, the MP's who dipped into the national till, all of who even though some MP's repaying some of the monies have got away scot free, sein them do community order work would be most satisfying.
But we all should take pride of where we live, and even though we haven't dropped a particular litter, we can still pick it up. I do frequently.
Also around the Seattle area you seen signs along the roads saying this highway is sponsered by ( and the name appears on the board) The sponsors get the cudos (very american) and the roads and pavements get cleaned.

Boy George had to pick up litter in an Orange overaul in the states a few years back. A good thing everyone could do is to pick up 3 pieces of litter a day.

It would help in the Council emptied the bins when they were full.
.
The ones in Gheluvelt Park are always overflowing on weekends and so is the one on Ombersley Road.
.
I suppose it would be too much to expect them to empty them at weekends when most people are out and about filling them.

Ah rj, but you are asking the impossible, that is for common sense to be applied.
A couple of years ago I mentioned to a senior City Councillor about the disgracefull amount of rubbish from outside the Odeon cinema along the High street and around the Fast food outlets, his reply was that it always got worse when the kids were on holiday from school. My reply was that as the school holidays were the same / similar times each year perhaps they (the streets departments) would be ready for the extra rubbish. All I had was a blank look of disbelief and a reply that they, the council, didn't drop the litter.
Couldn't make them up could you?

What a wonderful idea - trouble is it will only be the people who do not drop the litter clearing it up - the others will still continue to drop it. The London Road is a particular place where litter seems to accumulate - around Tesco's and up towards Spetchley Road. Another idea to tidy up the City would be to try and stop so many cars parking on the pavement (in lots of cases not necessary, just a habit that some people have got into).

Why not give a bucket and mop to all our counselors friends, Animal Right Activist, not forgetting all those naughty people who are put on community work. The job to clean up all the crape that Seagulls and Pigeons have deposited through out the City Centre .Shall we say start from the Worcester Bridge,up Broad St, Angel Place ,to the Corn Market ,from Elgar's Statue to say Forgat Street Station Bridge. After that little job done perhaps with out bring a tear to some people eyes let think of a way to rid this city of its flying vermin. After all Farmer wish to cull Badgers .Grey squirrels are being culled Why not cull our vermin and stop any likely disease spreading. Or is this to much to ask!!

I saw a "lady" drop litter on the grass then 2 doors up she went in. Black bin outside front of her house. Beggars belief. All the cleaning up in the world won't stop people like her dropping litter.
