Florence and the Machine are celebrating their first number one single after Spectrum (Say My Name) crashed into the Top 40 in the top spot.

But the band may well do so quietly, as they had to cancel two festival gigs this weekend because lead singer Florence Welch suffered a "vocal injury" last week.

Spectrum pushed Payphone, by Maroon 5 Featuring Wiz Khalifa, off the top of the chart, according to the Official Charts Company.

The song, remixed by Midas-like Scottish DJ Calvin Harris, surpassed the band's previous highest placed singles, 2009's You've Got The Love, which reached number five, and a 2010 reworking by Dizzee Rascal, entitled You Got The Dirtee Love, that reached number two.

Black Eyed Peas frontman Will.I.Am remained at number three with This Is Love, while Chris Brown's Don't Wake Me Up fell two places to four. Girl group Stooshe complete the top five with Black Heart.

Flame-haired singer Welch apologised to fans on Wednesday for the cancellation of performances at two festivals this weekend, Benicassim in Spain and Optimus Alive in Portugal.

"I've sustained a vocal injury and been told I cannot sing for a week - seriously I felt something snap, it was very frightening," she said.

"I'm so sorry to all the fans, I was desperate to still perform, but was told without question not to, so as not to do permanent damage."

Singer-songwriter Newton Faulkner made it a red-headed chart double as he topped the pile in the Official Albums Chart for the second time with his third album, Write It On Your Skin. His 2007 debut, Hand Built By Robots, also reached the top spot.

He pipped rapper Frank Ocean, a member of US hip-hop collective Odd Future, who was a new entry at number two with his first solo album, Channel Orange, selling just 3,000 copies less than Write It On Your Skin. Last week's number one album, Fortune by Chris Brown, fell four places to five.
