FIREFIGHTERS have launched a safety campaign in the run-up to Christmas.

Officers were in Worcester city centre yesterday handing out baubles and book marks reminding people to check their smoke alarms and be safe during the festive period.

Gill Pinder, community safety manager, said: “It is going really well and we are handing out a lot of stuff. Everyone is being very friendly.”

The red tree decorations carry the message: “Have you checked your smoke alarm this Christmas?” and bookmarks remind residents of the 12 safety messages.

They are:

  • Never leave candles unattended.
  • Always have an escape plan.
  • Keep decorations away from heat.
  • Never overload electrical sockets.
  • Excess alcohol and cooking don’t mix.
  • Ensure Christmas lights match British standards.
  • Never leave cooking unattended.
  • Always follow the firework code.
  • Check you smoke alarms every week.
  • Keep lighters and matches away from children.
  • Ensure smoking materials are fully extinguished.
  • Look out for elderly / vulnerable relatives this Christmas.

Fire officers were accompanied by a giant mobile billboard with before and after fire pictures illustrating how a fire could ruin your Christmas.
