By Janine Harrison »

This is the debut album from the young folk singer songwriter Laura Marling, who is currently leading the pack of distinctive young folk singers. She has a stunning voice, that instantly makes you want to listen, and her lyrics are world weary and unrepentant, yet full of confidence.

Stand out tracks are the opening "Ghosts", an acoustic ode to previous love effecting a relationship, which wouldn't sound out of place on a Suzanne Vega, or Joni Mitchell CD. "Tap at my Window" is a glorious song, full of strings which complement Laura's vocals, and teasing lyrics.

The two singles deserve mention as well, "My Manic & I", and "Night Terror" - a disturbingly beautiful track about a traumatised lover.

"Alas I cannot swim" may be released into a public currently up to their eyes in female singer songwriters, but Laura Marling should be sought out and listened to. Her music is timeless, and her voice enchanting and I predict a long future.
