Private Grocott - Fourth Battalion.


Second Battalion War Diary: Having learnt that the Tenth Batt were in the vicinity of LOCON it was decided to march through that village to give an opportunity for men meeting friends. The OC Tenth Batt gave orders for his Battalion to be formed up in two sides of a square. Our Battalion was formed up on the other two sides and Colonel Chesney expressed the great pleasure it gave him and his Battalion to meet the Second Battalion which had so distinguished itself during the campaign and hoped that the example we had set would be followed by his Battalion. Our Colonel replied expressing the pleasure it gave him and the Second Battalion to meet a county Battalion of the New Armies. The two Battalions were then fell out for half an hour to allow for mutual greeting. Before parting three cheers were given by each battalion. The drums of the Tenth Battalion then played us on our way for about a mile. In BETHUNE the same evening six officers of the 1Tenth honoured us with their presence at dinner.

Worcester Woman drowned. The dead body of Matilda Webb (56) a dressmaker was recovered from the River Teme. On August 13 she was charged with attempting to commit suicide by drowning in the Laugherne Brook. On that occasion she admitted jumping into the brook because she could not do her work.
