THE war memorial to the fallen of the First World War in the village of Salwarp, near Droitwich has been re-dedicated after a two-years restoration programme, just in time for the annual fete on Saturday.

Eleven young men from the village died in the conflict and today's youngsters remembered their sacrifice by donning period dress to promote the fete, which will raise funds to preserve the ancient churches of Salwarp and neighbouring Martin Hussingtree.

Carol Hughes, one of the organisers, said: “The fete is the largest annual event in Salwarpe and attracts thousands of visitors each year. It offers a fun afternoon for the whole family while helping safeguard the future of our historic churches”.

Held at Churchfields Farm in Copcut Lane, the event starts at 2pm and entry is £1 for adults, children and parking are free.

Among the usual stalls and games will be two new ones, have a go archery with professional coaches and mobile crazy golf. Visitors can roll the dice to win a Mercedes sports car, while listening to music from West Mercia Police Brass Band. Sports Partnership Hereford & Worcester is organising games and activities for children, who should register on arrival to participate, and all will receive a certificate, while Wychavon District Council is bringing its roadshow with the popular climbing wall and other activities, including circus skills.

The main arena will feature displays of Zumba and street dancing by Dancefloor Academy of Dance and Fitness and Fitsteps and there will be displays in the church by Saltway Quilters, flower arrangements by the ladies of the parish and a display of local history.

Teas with home made cake will be offered in the village hall by Salwarpe WI and there will also be a barbecue, bric-a-brac marquee, cider tent, soft drinks and Churchfields ice-cream on the field.
