WORCESTER'S First World War Victoria Cross winner Fred Dancox is to be honoured during a special ceremony at the Tower of London on Saturday.
His name will be among those of 180 other war heroes read out from the poppy-filled Tower moat at sunset, after which a bugler will play the Last Post.
Private Dancox, who was awarded the VC after single handedly capturing a German machine gun and 40 prisoners at Boesinghe. Belgium on October 9, 1917, was nominated for the honour by his grandson, 82 years old Fred Dancox of Hampton Lovatt, near Droitwich.
"I hope to travel down to London with my wife Carole to see the occasion," said Mr Dancox. "It should be really special."
Sadly Fred Dancox, the soldier, never returned to his home city. He was killed in action as Masnieres, France on November 30, 1917. A special paving stone memorial to him is due to be unveiled in front of Worcester Guildhall in 1917 and his Victoria Cross is on display in the Worcestershire Regiment Museum in Worcester.
