A NEW cocktail bar and restaurant has opened in the heart of the city.

Pear Tree Bar and Kitchen has replaced the former Tortugas Caribbean restaurant in Friar Street, which recently closed its doors.

The new establishment features a full range of cocktails and is also serving up beers, wines, spirits and home-cooked food.

It's run by chef Matthew Davis, who has described his food as "wholesome" and "hearty."

The 28-year-old said: "It's my first business venture.

"I'm enjoying it so far. It's nice being able to go to the beat of my own drum.

"I can cook the food the way I want to. I'm waiting on tables as well. I'm listening to feedback from customers".

The new establishment first opened around two weeks ago. A signature dish at the restaurant is the pommes dauphine, which are crispy puffs made by mixing mash potatoes with choux pastry.

Tortugas closed last month after first opening in 2021.

The eatery had been offering a taste of the Caribbean with authentic Caribbean food, rum-based tiki cocktails, and classic dishes.

A spokesperson for Tortugas said: "It is with heavy hearts that we say goodbye to this chapter of Tortugas.

"We want to express our deepest gratitude to our wonderful customers who have supported us throughout the years, thank you for being a part of our journey."
