12.40: All lanes on the M5 northbound between J6 and J5 are now open and recovery of the broken down truck is now complete.

10am: West Midlands Ambulance Service (WMAS) has issued an update.

A WMAS spokesman says they received the initial 999 call at 5am, and two ambulances, two paramedic officers, the trust’s Hazardous Area Response Team and a MERIT trauma doctor were sent to the scene.

The spokesman said: "When the emergency services arrived they found one lorry which had partially left the carriageway, the cab of the lorry had ended up down an embankment and had overturned.

"The lorry driver, a man in his 40s, was trapped in the wreckage and, upon initial assessment by ambulance staff, it was clear he had sustained serious injuries.

“Ambulance staff, the doctor, HART and the fire service’s technical rescue team worked together to carefully extricate the man from the cab.

"After a complex extrication, the man was fully released from the overturned cab. Ambulance staff were then able to administer advanced trauma care to stabilise his condition and treat the injuries he had sustained to his head, body, arms and leg.

"The man was given advanced pain relief before being fully immobilised and taken on blue lights to Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham, the doctor travelled in the ambulance to continue treatment en route.

“The second lorry driver, who was out of his vehicle upon our arrival, was described as walking wounded.

"He had suffered minor injuries and was taken to Worcestershire Royal Hospital as a precaution.”

Original story:

DRIVERS have been stuck in roads around Worcester after a lorry crash closed the M5.

Two lanes have been-reopened on the M5 northbound but an early-morning crash between two lorries closed the motorway between junction 5 and junction 4a, causing delays in Worcester and Droitwich.

Two lanes have been re-opened, although the entry slip road is still closed.

Long delays are still expected.

Commuters posted travel updates on our Facebook page.

Helen Benton said: "All Droitwich roads are blocked."

Julia Ellins said: "Chaos on the A38 Bromsgrove."

Laura Meredith said: "A449 at Hartlebury is horrendous going towards Kidderminster. Virtually stationary."

Kelly Hill said of the M5: "It’s still mostly at a standstill, it moves really slowly for a couple of minutes then just stops again."

At around 5.20am, the road was closed between junction 5 at the A38 near Droitwich and junction 4a of the M42.

One of the lorries involved in the crash has left considerable debris across the road.

Delays are reaching back to junction 6 at the A440, the A4449 Warndon Way and the A4538 Pershore Lane, all in Worcester.

There are tailbacks in Bath Road upto the Ketch Roundabout.

There is a standstill on the M5.

Drivers are encouraged to leave at M5 J5 and follow A38 north (Via M42 J1) to proceed north to M5 J4A.

Highways England claim that delays are currently at up to an hour and that crews are currently at the scene trying to move the lorry.

John Kirkby, a Worcester News reader who iscaught in the tailbacks said: "Traffic was still being allowed to join the M5 North at J6 at 6.45am. I was one of them and have been stationary for 90mins now."

Wayne Froggatt added: "I’ve been sat between j7 and 6 for 2 hours and still not moving."
