A COMMUNITY group with a flair for history are hoping to defend their title in this year’s 2018 Worcestershire Education Awards.

Discover History, which is a joint enterprise by Helen Lee and Paul Harding, was crowned winners of the Community Involvement Award in the first ever Worcestershire Education Awards in 2017.

The awards, organised by the Worcester News in partnership with the University of Worcester, showcase those that inspire children.

This year, Miss Lee has also been nominated for the Unsung Hero Award in recognition of her outstanding personality and enthusiasm.

Speaking on the nominations, she said: “Being nominated is a great feeling. When I helped set up Discover History with Paul Harding, I have always took a larger behind the scenes role.

“This has been in a number of areas including creating workshops and guided tour of Worcester covering the often overshadowed characters and events in history.

“The Women of Worcester Walking Tour and talk was created to do just that. Men have always been highlighted more in history. I wanted to change this.”

She added: “Discover History are once again overwhelmed by the news that we have been nominated for the 2018 Worcestershire Education Awards. We believe history is the story of people, events and happenings around us. Local history is one of the areas we specialise.

“This means everyone should have access to it.”

“History should be all inclusive. We bring it to life for people of all ages and abilities. Learning is a life long opportunity. We thrive when we are talking to the residents of care homes.

“We enjoy watching children take part in our hands on history activities and love to see adults learn something about the city they have lived in all there life. We are so happy to be nominated for a second year. Thank you.”

On International Women’s Day this year, Miss Lee was recognised as having ‘suffragette spirit’ by Amnesty International and was the only woman in Herefordshire and Worcestershire to be recognised.
