STAFF at a Worcester supermarket are spreading some charity cheer this Christmas.

Asda in Lowesmoor has backed ITV’s charitable Text Santa campaign to raise awareness and funds for UK charities which support the most vulnerable during the festive season.

The store will also be raising money for local charities, such as Funny Blood, which raises funds for research and awareness of platelet function disorders, through the sale of Text Santa hats and T-shirts.

Gemma Layland, community life champion at Asda Worcester, said: “No one should suffer at Christmas and that’s why we’re getting fully behind Text Santa again this year.

“We hope our customers agree and join us while we put the fun into fund-raising and help spread some festive magic to those who are vulnerable in our community during the festive season.”

Last year it raised £4.1 million and this year it is supporting six causes, Carers UK, Whizz Kidz, the Anthony Nolan Trust, Together for Short Lives, Age UK and Marie Curie Cancer Care.

The Text Santa campaign culminates in a live show on ITV on Friday, December 21, featuring family favourites such as Ant and Dec, Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby.

Sums of £1, £5 or £10 can be donated to the campaign by texting SANTA1, SANTA5 or SANTA10 to 70070, with 100 per cent going to the Text Santa charities.
