RECORD crowds attended an adrenalin-packed community games which had something for everyone, from football to fencing and winners to meerkats.

More than 1,200 people attended the third annual Norton Community Games – well over the 800 who went last year.

Activities included scuba diving, climbing, fencing, dancing, pony rides, inflatables, golf, shooting and the customary tug of war.

Also popular were meerkats from Animal Encounters, Guide Dogs for the Blind, historical displays and a team from Wychavon District Council with their smoothie-making bicycle.

Three local schools – Norton Juxta Kempsey, St Barnabas in Drakes Broughton and Cherry Orchard in Pershore – kicked off the event with an Olympic torch run followed by an inter-school athletics competition with medals and trophies.

Mike Goode, chairman of the games which were held at Norton Cricket Club, near Worcester, said this year’s event had been the biggest and best yet.

“The aim of the day is to make the activities accessible to all, rather than make a profit. Thankfully we covered the costs of the event with the help of community grants and sponsorship. A small surplus will be ploughed into other community events later in the year.

“Without doubt the most pleasing aspect of the day was the number of volunteers. About 40 teenagers from Norton Youth Club, Pershore High School and the Girl Guides helped organise activities. These young people played a full and active part in the day.”
