EVESHAM’S former leisure centre has been handed over to town business JohnsonVellen Centre of Excellence.

The building in Davies Road is to become a state of the art training academy.

The first phase of the redevelopment has been completed and has seen JVCE open its doors to students on two full-time vocational courses, vehicle custom, body and paint, and fabrication and welding engineering.

Paul Johnson, managing director of JVCE, said: “We are delighted to be given the opportunity by Wychavon District Council, they have supported this venture from the outset. With the support of the council and the WLEP, we plan to convert the former leisure centre into a modern, ‘real life’ academy. Coming from industry, we have experienced first-hand the urgent skills shortage, so we plan to work with businesses to bridge the skills gap.”

The second phase of the redevelopment will see the opening of a new day nursery in January 2014, and the conversion of the former swimming pool into a HGV mechanics training centre and fabrication workshop.
