ONE of the trio of brave women who stopped a fugitive in his tracks has told how she acted on instinct.Avril James, of Henwick Road, St John's, Worcester, has been dubbed Have-a-go Avril' by colleagues at Ogle's Pharmacy in St John's after her CCTV image appeared in the Worcester News story "Have-a-go-heroines" yesterday. She was one of three women caught on CCTV when she stepped in to stop the man, who was being chased by police officers on Thursday, December 7. Police appealed for the women to come forward and Miss James was the first to respond. The 58-year-old told the Worcester News she was walking across the bridge on her way to meet a friend for coffee when she saw a policeman running after the man.She said: "I just thought what's going on'. It happened so quickly, I just saw the first lady try to stop him then I tried to stop him. They said I hit him with my handbag but I don't remember."She said the man had run past her, and she had chased him across the road. She saw the third woman try to stop him, then a man in a van stopped and held him up."He asked me to hold his hand behind his back with this other guy, then the police arrived. It all happened in minutes," she said. The man was wanted on a warrant issued by Cheltenham magistrates in connection with possessing an offensive weapon and assaulting three police officers. The trio tackled him as he ran across the river Severn bridge from the city centre towards St John's Miss James said she had not thought twice about her actions and put them down to instinct, as well as working in security for about 15 years.Clearly still reeling from the unexpected praise and attention, she said she had not expected the amount of exposure she had received."It's only today I think why is there all this fuss. I cannot believe it. I haven't told anyone, I met a friend that day in town for coffee and I told him," she added."I told the girls and we laughed and joked about it, but I haven't boasted about it."Ogle's store manager Sheila Moss said: "We are really very impressed and I have to say there probably is not anybody else here who would have been so brave. It's not something I would have done."We are just very proud of her. We're now calling her have-a-go Avril."Sgt Jim Hopkins, of Worcester Police urged the other women to come forward as they wanted to speak to them to say thank you.He dismissed any rumours of prosecution relating to the women using bags to stop the man as "absolutely ridiculous.""At the end of the day they used their common sense, they tried to assist police officers," he said."There are circumstances when people have been arrested in the past but that was when people went completely overboard. We want to praise them for what they have done. There's no chance whatsoever of us doing anything else."Several Worcester News readers have commented on Miss James' brave actions on our website.Chris Berry said: "These ladies deserve a medal, with more people like these ladies and van driver on our streets crime will be halved." Sgt Hopkins said they had facilities to recognise people in some way, and would look into it once they had come forward.
