TWO hero passers-by saved a man's life by dragging him from his car just before it burst into flames.

Johanne Charko and and a man who has not been named were both passing when a white Vauxhall Combo van and grey Mini were involved in a serious crash on the B4424 Upton Road at Callow End at about 7.30pm on Tuesday night.

They rushed to the aid of Chris Harris, aged 22, of Monarch Drive, St John's, Worcester, - who was suffering from two broken legs, two broken arms and a broken wrist - and dragged him from the vehicle before the car burst into flames.

Mrs Charko, 43, of Callow Farm, Hillside, Martley, said she and her husband Edmund, 50, had been riding their motorbikes when they came across the accident.

"First we saw a man lying in the road so Edmund went to help him," she said.

"Then I could see the driver of the mini was trapped. The van was on fire and there was smoke going into the mini and I just thought I've got to get him out before it explodes.

"I knew there was danger but it was just something I had to do.

"Another man got his top half and I took his legs. I could feel they were broken and his foot was trapped under the pedal but we just had to get him out as quick as we could."

Alec Mackie, spokesman for Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service, hailed Mrs Charka and the other man, heroes and said their actions could have saved the mini driver's life.

"We will be considering both for a bravery award," he said.

"They certainly stopped him suffering even more serious injuries than he already had and probably saved his life."

Mr Harris was treated by an anaesthetist from Worcestershire Royal Hospital who was called to the scene before being airlifted to Selly Oak Hospital by police helicopter which had a paramedic on board.

It is believed the 36-year-old van driver, Andy Williford, of Suffield Close, Leigh Sinton, near Malvern, got himself out of his vehicle. He was taken to Worcestershire Royal Hospital by land ambulance suffering from a leg injury.
